Guest Application Process:
Q. As hosts of the Conscious Discussions talk radio show,
what do you look for in a guest?
A. Guests range from environmentalists, authors, volunteers
and water conservationists to book promotion experts; the
guests are spoken to live from across the globe - including
West Africa, Canada, the US and the UK. We want someone
who is passionate about what they do and will inspire our
listeners to become more proactive in their own lives, while
discussing an important issue.
Q. What do you want to know about potential guests?
A. We do not require past experience or samples of previous
interviews, although most hosts prefer guests who have some
experience. People who want to appear on our show as a featured
guest simply query us and explain how their cause, book,
topic or endeavor fits in with the focus of our show. If
they are passionate and we feel strongly about their message
then we welcome them to appear on Conscious Discussions.
After all, our show is not about finger pointing, but more
saluting those individuals making positive changes we all
want to see in this world.
Q.
What is your idea of an undesirable guest?
A. One who over-talks the host and doesn’t leave room
for the host to respond. Clearing of throats, typing on
a keyboard and excessive background noise during an interview
are all disruptive. It is also offensive to listeners when
a guest breathes into the phone or has the phone so close
to their mouth that “f’s”, “p’s”,
“s’s” and “sh’s” sounds
become offensive and abrasive
Q.
What determines if guests are invited back?
A. We have invited guests to appear again in future shows
for three reasons. First, they were very passionate about
their topic and inspired enthusiasm in our listeners and
us. Secondly, if the show seems to end too quickly and we
feel that they could have covered more information than
they were able to during that first interview. Finally,
the company or individual may have created a new product
or endeavor that would be of added interest to our listeners.
Q.
How should someone approach you?
A. We want to know why our audience would find them interesting
as guests on Conscious Discussions. Bio's and press releases
are nice, but not necessary. Because our time is very limited,
we prefer to hear from them in their words why they should
be on our show and refer us to their website – and
this should be where their bio, credentials, awards, press
releases, present endeavors and so forth would be available
for us to browse. Authors who are looking to query a program
director or the host of a radio show should be aware of
the fact that sending attachments along with query letters
is considered bad etiquette.
Q.
What happens if a guest emails you and you don't respond
within a reasonable time? Should the person email or call
you?
A. No. We always respond even if it is to say "no thanks".
However, if the person has experienced technical glitches
with their Internet server or computer and is worried the
email did not to through - they can write and explain this,
and we would understand that.
Q.
What are some of the pet peeves that you have when it comes
to queries?
A. When someone writes asking us to promote them or writes
a query letter in an unprofessional manor, we are unlikely
to respond in a positive way. Guests should be aware what
their own time zone is and not pester the host with questions
like how long the show is when that information is usually
available on the program’s website and in the information
package that approved guests receive. If the applicant hasn’t
listened to the program or researched the site, it shows.
